Artist's Comments

Ahhh, my summer love.

This thing took a million years to do. It's a woodblock print, meaning I had to go to the woodshop and construct a big, flat board and then carve away everything I didn't want to show up black. I used basswood to make the board (it cuts like butter), and a cheapo Speedball lino cutter to do the carving. Sliced up my fingers a bit in the process. Thankfully the table saw didn't eat me.

That nastiness done, I got a roller and some oil-based ink and inked up the block, which is an art in itself, truly. Then I cut the paper, which I can't remember the name of at the moment, slapped it down on the block, and rubbed the image onto it (this also requires some finesse).

It was beautiful to see the first good print pull up. All that work really paid off in the end. My beautiful Carousel Boy came to life.

As well as being a bit of an homage to Velvet Goldmine with the giant cigarette holder, it's also a tribute to all the brave Glam, Punk, and Goth children out there who herald their arrival in the world with their fierce self-expression. The carousel horse has come to life, broken away, and really means business.

Dog bless the dandies!

--------

I plan to watercolour some of these, which should be exciting to do.
Black and white prints will sell for $50, and colour for $100. They will be limited edition, signed and numbered.
Each print is roughly 30x30 inches.

More details soon.

P.S. I always start thinking of the song Judy Teen by Cockney Rebel when I look at this thing... go listen to it! [link]

It is my hope that I may be who I will, and that others will know me for who I am rather than for what others may say about me.

It turned out beautifully! Would make a pretty great book illustration, too.

This is a woodcut! It must have been so hard to do. All the work that must have went into it really DID pay off. It's a beautiful design!

It was frustrating at times. Had to keep the Elmer's glue handy to repair tiny chips and breaks.

And thanks!
